Looking Forward / Looking Backwards is a series of articles discussing ACC PUB INK’s former and upcoming projects.
When I started plotting out the future of ACC Pub Ink all the way back in 2016, I knew that The Valley Chronicles would be an important part of it. TVC was my first novel and probably what legitimized me as an artist in most people’s minds, not to mention one of my biggest accomplishments, and has outsold the far-superior Valley Chronicles: Quest due to just how shiny and cool it seemed when it first appeared.
As much as I love John and Violet and their adventures in the Valley, I wrote the novel’s first draft in eighth grade. TVC isn’t the best thing I’ve ever written, or the strongest, so I knew that as I branched out I’d want to go over it with a fine toothed comb. When I announced ACC 2017 in November of ’16, I outlined the three iterations of the book I wanted to make:
- A Revised Edition, essentially identical to the original with some tweaks to a few rough passages and all major typos removed.
- A Library Edition, a hardcover bound edition of the book for my local libraries and media center. I know some people find my book cost-prohibitive (or its their excuse at least) so this will help a lot.
- A Deluxe Edition, presenting the library edition with a nice dust cover and several extra features including the original stories and a few brand new stuff.
The revised edition came out all the way back in September, but the Library and Deluxe Editions have been taking a little longer. That’s because they’re going to have a little something extra- brand new covers by Jenette Harris.
Obviously, the paperback covers by Sophie Shen are truly something special, but over the course of my time at River Hill I’ve met and befriended so many amazing artists who I’m so excited to work with. Jenette is going to bring her A-game to the hardcover covers, which you should see by the end of February, and you guys are going to love them.
See you later!
